HUAWEI has updated its line of smartwatches. The WATCH GT 3 model is made in a classic case, equipped with many options for sports, allows you to listen to music without a smartphone, measures blood oxygen levels and much more. The manufacturer also claims good autonomy. Testing the capabilities of the device.

Elegant execution

HUAWEI has released a gadget with two case diameters – 42 and 46 mm. We received a 42mm version with a light leather strap. The watch, thanks to its elegant design, looks neat even on a woman’s hand. The younger modification differs from the older one not only in size: there are no notches at the edges of the screen indicating seconds. The steel rim of the device is equipped with two buttons. The first is a rotating navigation wheel with vibration feedback, the second is a quick call to the training menu. The glossy surface of the case quickly becomes covered with fingerprints, but they can be easily removed.

The display is entirely covered with tempered glass with beveled edges. There is a high-quality oleophobic coating. The leather strap of the HUAWEI WATCH GT 3 is pleasant to the touch, but is not suitable for swimming in the pool. After a week of constant wear, small creases appeared on it. If desired, the included strap is easy to replace, because the fastening is standard.

Great screen

The new product received a high-quality AMOLED panel with a resolution of 466×466 pixels. The viewing angles are excellent, the color gamut exceeds sRGB, the shades are saturated, and the pixel density is good – 352 ppi. During testing, the weather was not sunny, but even so we were able to appreciate the high brightness of the matrix. The information is perfectly readable on the street.

By default, 10 dials are built into the model, from classic chronometers to spectacular digital displays. The Always-On-Display analogue can be customized to your liking. However, for some watch faces, a splash screen is generated in a certain style, so you won’t be able to choose a different option.

Already familiar menu

Although the device runs HarmonyOS 2.0, the interface is as close as possible to the previous generation on LiteOS. The watch is controlled by two buttons and swipes across the screen. It’s good that the developers retained the rotating wheel: in rain or snow it is much easier to use mechanical navigation than to slide a wet finger across the glass. When you rotate the icon, the menu scales, and you can also scroll through the lists of settings. The bottom button opens the workout section, but it can be easily reassigned to, for example, switch music.

The menu has a wide range of options: heart rate monitoring, pulse oximeter, body temperature measurement, alarm clock, music control, stopwatch, and so on. HUAWEI WATCH GT 3 can take hands-free calls, working as a hands-free headset. During a conversation, audibility is good. This feature is convenient for those who are driving. It will also come in handy if you receive a call, but the smartphone cannot be found in a timely manner or is lying on charge.

Workouts and other useful features

The accessory is synchronized with the phone via the Health application (HUAWEI Health), using the Bluetooth 5.1 protocol. The user-friendly software interface allows you to configure all functions and track your training results. A significant part of the fine adjustments is available in the utility. Even contacts and music are added only this way. The last feature is especially useful – the built-in storage capacity of WATCH GT 3 is 4 GB. You can download your favorite tracks to your watch, connect your headphones and go for a light run.

The range of activities is impressive – more than a hundred ready-made programs, many of which will appeal to runners. There are options with different durations and intensity of classes. You can choose an initial program for 20 minutes or prefer a workout that is designed for a longer distance and lasts 70 minutes.

It’s also convenient to create your own training plans in the app. The watch is equipped with a GPS module that transmits accurate data about your jogging routes. The signal, thanks to the support of several navigation systems, will always be stable.

The gadget also tracks swimming, walking, cycling, exercise bike, jump rope, skiing, snowboarding and even a rowing machine. There is also automatic activity detection. The device records a wide range of parameters: from distance traveled and pace to calories burned and heart rate. The last option deserves special mention: the HUAWEI WATCH GT 3 uses an updated sensor with TruSeen 5.0+ technology. It detects heart rate with higher accuracy than the previous generation sensor.

The NFC module is present, but is intended for connection to other branded equipment, and only HUAWEI Pay is currently supported among payment systems. Perhaps this is how the company wants to differentiate between the flagship series and the GT line. But there is a possibility that the missing functions will be added with system updates.

It is worth noting that at the time of review, the software had not yet been fully adapted to the current series of gadgets. The “Health” application from the Play Market did not have the WATCH GT 3 model in the list of devices. Most likely, the choice of region also affects it – it was not possible to check the operation of the cycle calendar, as well as see what utilities can be downloaded to the new watch from the store. At the same time, the rest of the chips work properly. We recommend installing the “Health” application from AppGallery: apparently, it receives updates first of all.

Autonomy

The gadget has a battery with a capacity of 292 mAh. According to HUAWEI, in normal use the accessory will last up to 7 days, and with intensive use – 4 days. We conducted our own measurements to evaluate autonomy.

During testing, the pedometer was constantly running, body temperature, pulse and stress levels were monitored. In addition, sleep phases were monitored every night. In this mode, after seven days of continuous operation, the battery was discharged to 40%, which can be considered an excellent result. The watch comes with a magnetic charger in a plastic case. WATCH GT 3 can also be powered from a smartphone that supports reverse wireless charging.

Results

HUAWEI WATCH GT 3 is a worthy successor to the popular line. This is a beautiful accessory with many functions that is suitable for lovers of an active lifestyle. The gadget demonstrates good autonomy even with constant monitoring of many health indicators. Among the shortcomings, we note the reduced NFC function and difficulties in using the software on the just presented model. However, these nuances can be corrected in the next system updates.
