At the IFA 2020 exhibition, the HONOR brand presented its vision of a premium smart watch – Watch GS Pro. An accessory in this class must have a high-quality display, advanced functionality and decent battery life. Does the new product correspond to its declared status and is it worthy of attention? Let’s check the gadget in all respects.
Military standard design
The base of the GS Pro is made of polycarbonate, which feels similar to the Raptor protective coating for the body of a car. A decorative bezel and two buttons are made of steel: one calls up a list of all applications, the other opens a pre-selected program. On the bottom there is a slightly protruding platform with sensors and contacts for charging.
The included strap is made of nylon. It is quite slippery, so when putting it on it often jumps out of your hands. The 22mm mount makes it easy to replace. The new product, due to its immodest dimensions (diameter is 48 mm and thickness is 13.6 mm), looks bulky on a woman’s wrist.
The manufacturer claims water resistance of 5 ATM, which means the device can be submerged to a depth of 50 meters. The GS Pro case has been tested by shock, vibration, sand, salt, and temperature, receiving the status of compliance with the military standard MIL-STD-810G.
The round 1.39-inch matrix is made using AMOLED technology. High image clarity is ensured by a pixel density of 326 ppi. The auto-brightness sensor works correctly – the screen does not dazzle at night, and during the day, even in direct sunlight, the information remains readable. One downside to note is that the display doesn’t always wake up when you turn your wrist, so sometimes you have to manually wake it up. Out of the box, 12 dials are available on the watch, and in the proprietary application on your smartphone you can download over 150 design options.
The Watch GS Pro has about 100 sports modes, from running to climbing, yoga to rafting. During exercise, the device reads a lot of indicators: a pulsometer measures heart rate, a pulse oximeter measures blood oxygen saturation, and a GPS sensor measures location. The gyroscope and accelerometer work together to accurately count steps. Training is accompanied by voice prompts about the distance traveled or a signal about excessive load. And if the sports program was not activated before class or turned off after, the watch will definitely remind you of this by analyzing changes in activity level.
Functions for every day
GS Pro is capable of receiving and making calls. The function is convenient when the phone is in another room and you need to quickly answer a call. To dial a number, you need to add contacts to your favorites list in advance. Conversation is provided by the built-in speaker and microphone. You can hear your interlocutors well, and they don’t complain about the sound.
In addition, the accessory displays notifications from the smartphone, although without the ability to respond. The last 10 messages are saved in the history. However, their source is not always clear; for example, the device displays WhatsApp, Gmail and Instagram icons, while the Telegram or Viber applications remain incognito.
The watch constantly monitors the user’s health: if you’ve been sitting too long, they’ll suggest moving, if your pulse has increased, they’ll warn you. There is a program with breathing exercises that will help you relax and improve your mood. To prevent the owner from catching a cold, the device will notify you in advance about adverse weather conditions. With the reverse route function, you won’t get lost – GS Pro will remember the road and will guide you along the already known path. For owners of HUAWEI and HONOR smartphones, additional features are provided: remote control of photography, creation of your own watch faces, and so on.
Synchronization occurs using the HUAWEI Health utility, available on Android and iOS. The program displays all collected health indicators of the user: pulse, sleep quality, stress level and oxygen in the blood. Recordings of activities with the route displayed on the map, speed of movement, elevation changes and calories burned are available for viewing. To avoid taking your phone with you on a run, the proprietary app allows you to preload tracks directly onto your watch, with a limit of 2 GB of available memory. Songs are played either through the watch’s built-in speaker or via Bluetooth headphones.
Half a month without sockets
The 790 mAh battery in the Watch GS Pro is almost a record capacity for such equipment. And this is a whole 15 days of autonomy in the “do not deny yourself anything” mode: constant synchronization with a smartphone, receiving notifications, answering calls, playing sports with GPS and daily heart rate monitoring. If you use the device not so actively, then the 25 days of work declared by the vendor sound quite convincing. With constant communication with satellites, the gadget will work for a day and a half.
The watch is powered through a magnetic cradle connected via a Type-C cable. This is a big plus – if the wire frays, you don’t need to look for the charging assembly. From 0 to 100%, Watch GS Pro replenishes energy in an hour and a half.
