Smart watches have long become an essential everyday accessory for many. But what to choose if you need the most protected gadget in case of extreme cold, heat or even deep sea diving? The answer may be a new product from Amazfit. The T-Rex 2 offers a rugged design, long battery life, and supports over 150 sports activities, including fishing. Let’s check the device in action.
Brutality in the flesh
The body of the new product is made of a practical polymer alloy (matte plastic) that does not collect scratches. The bezel is coated with metal, and the 22mm strap is made of silicone. The material does not absorb moisture, but also does not breathe, which is why the hand under the strap sweats a lot. The model is certified according to the military standard MIL-STD-810G. This means that the accessory is resistant to shock, freezing rain, salt fog, diving up to 100 meters and temperature changes ranging from -40 to 70 degrees.
The dimensions of the gadget are rather large: the case diameter is 47 millimeters and the thickness is 14. The device weighs 66.5 grams including the strap. Considering its size and massiveness, T-Rex 2 will look natural only on a man’s hand. The watch is available in four colors: “star black”, “wild green”, “charcoal black”, “desert khaki”.
AMOLED in all its glory
The display is a round 1.39-inch AMOLED panel. Pixel density is 326 ppi, peak brightness is 1000 nits. Such characteristics provide a detailed picture that is clearly visible even in bright sunshine. The screen, thanks to the protruding bezel, is significantly recessed – this is how the manufacturer managed to protect the glass from external influences. The Always on Display function is in place with many design options and an auto-brightness sensor, which always correctly adapts to environmental conditions.
OS and application capabilities
Amazfit T-Rex 2 runs the proprietary Zepp OS operating system, version 1. The system operates slowly, the animations periodically slow down, but this does not cause any particular discomfort when interacting with the interface. Navigation is carried out using four touch buttons. One of them can be configured to call any application. Among the interesting features of the firmware are a built-in player, a utility for displaying sunrise and sunset times, a remote shutter release for a smartphone camera, and the ability to respond to messages with template phrases or emojis.
The clock is activated in the Zepp mobile application. After which, data from the accessory on all health indicators will begin to be transferred to the utility on the phone. The program also allows you to configure notification sources and the order of quick access cards, remove software and update the gadget’s software. In addition to the eight preset watch faces, you can download over 100 more designs through Zepp, all of which are free. The app store allows you to download 17 additional utilities, including a calculator, a teeth cleaning assistant and tools for interacting with a smart home.
On guard of health
Amazfit T-Rex 2 supports 158 types of physical activity, even fishing, parkour and mountaineering. If the user starts running, cycling or swimming, the gadget will automatically recognize the activity and offer to start training. The proprietary BioTrackerTM 3 biometric sensor, consisting of 6 photodiodes and 2 LEDs, will correctly determine heart rate, blood oxygen levels and stress during exercise. All data will be analyzed against Amazfit’s own health system and converted into a single PAI score for ease of understanding.
Due to the two-position GPS module, which supports five satellite systems, the watch accurately recognizes the location of its owner. The T-Rex 2 will notify the user about the round values of the distance traveled using a buzzer (beeper) and a linear vibration motor. They will also signal significant deviations in heart rate and oxygen levels in the blood. The model is also capable of analyzing sleep phases and the quality of breathing during sleep.
On August 1, the watch received a global update that introduced several important and expected features. Eleven sport modes now allow you to create individual activity templates that allow you to customize warm-up, exercise, rest and recovery periods. There is also an option to import routes from external sources, such as Strava. With this data, the T-Rex 2 will display real-time navigation and keep you on track.
According to the manufacturer, while navigating along imported routes, the smartwatch shows the user’s movement in real time directly on the display. This makes it easier than ever to embark on an outdoor adventure along popular trails.
Additionally, T-Rex 2’s new TrackBack feature safely guides users back to the starting point of the same route or to places and waypoints that can be individually marked along the route.
The new product is equipped with an impressive 500 mAh battery. We measured the operating time on one charge with auto-adjustment of screen brightness turned on. In active operating mode (constant synchronization with a smartphone, receiving notifications, tracking health indicators, displaying weather), the watch lasted 20 days without a power outlet. If you add the Always on Display function, the accessory consumes battery energy much faster – about 15% per day. And in training mode with geopositioning turned on, in 2 hours and 35 minutes of walking, the gadget used up 13% of the charge.
The device is powered by a cradle with two contacts and a powerful magnet. To replenish energy, we used a standard 18-watt adapter. From it, T-Rex 2 charges up to 50% in 35 minutes, and up to 100% in an hour and a half.
