The Amazfit brand was founded in 2015 by the Chinese company Huami Technology. The Mi Band series of popular fitness bracelets is her brainchild. But the manufacturer also has various smartwatches, the line of which was recently expanded with a new product — Amazfit Stratos 3. This is a gadget with an unusual screen and many functions for sports fans. Let’s see if the company was able to create another bestseller.

Brutal appearance

The body of the device is made of polycarbonate with carbon fiber imitation. Water resistance of 5 ATM is declared. The bezel, which plays a decorative role, is made of ceramic, which guarantees its resistance to scratches. There are four steel buttons on the side: action confirmation, up, down, return. There are enough of them to completely replace the touch display. For example, while running or in the pool.

The watch is more aimed at a male audience; the diameter is too large for a woman’s hand. The included silicone strap is pleasant to the touch and has a large number of holes, thanks to which the watch can be easily fastened on any wrist. The fasteners have a standard size (22 millimeters), so finding a replacement for the original strap will be easy. On the bottom there is a practically non-protruding heart rate sensor and four contacts for charging.

The display is not afraid of the sun

The smart watch is equipped with a 1.3‑inch transflective TFT screen. Among the main advantages of the technology are energy efficiency and the ability to reflect ambient light. The principle of operation is simple: the brighter the lighting around, the better the information on the display is visible. Indeed, on a sunny day, the numbers on the screen are perfectly readable without additional backlighting. You will have to activate it only in the evening, choosing from 5 brightness levels. Since there is no light sensor, you will have to manually adjust the backlight strength. But this will need to be done once or twice.

The matrix received a resolution of 320x320 pixels, which gives a sufficient pixel density of 238 ppi. To protect the display, tempered Gorilla Glass 3 with high-quality oleophobic coating is used. By the way, the touch grid is noticeable in the light, and the colors on the screen look dull and faded. The viewing angles are also disappointing.

Synchronization with smartphone

The link to the phone is the Zepp mobile application, available on iOS and Android. When you turn it on for the first time, a QR code appears on the watch, which must be scanned with your smartphone’s camera. The program displays statistics on daily activity. In the Amazfit Stratos 3 tab, notification sources, daily goals and widgets are configured. There are 8 standard watch faces available, but if you wish, you can easily create your own by uploading a background and setting the type of hands and divisions you like.

Focus on sports

The main functionality of the new product is focused on health — 80 sports modes will cover the needs of almost any person. For each workout, there is a set of special parameters and control adjustments. So, when swimming, the touch display is turned off, and when running, you can choose the goal of the activity: endurance, fat burning, healthy cardio and much more. The BioTracker PPG optical sensor measures heart rate around the clock and warns of high pulse values. The Firstbeat algorithm evaluates a user’s ability to tolerate a certain physical activity and helps to avoid injuries due to excessive training.

The utility displays statistics of steps taken, heart rate, periods of deep and shallow sleep. The latter is especially important, because vitality directly depends on the quality of sleep. Detailed activity records are also available for viewing. By the way, the clarity of measurements is ensured by the support of most satellite systems, as well as a well-tuned gyroscope and accelerometer.

Controls and functions

The Stratos 3 interface is user-friendly. Swiping to the left brings up the notification history, to the right — the menu of all applications, up — the quick settings panel, down — various widgets, the list and order of which can be easily adjusted in the mobile application.

The watch runs on the proprietary Amazfit OS operating system based on Android. Thanks to this, there is a complete file system. The gadget can be used as a flash drive, downloading files via Wi-Fi or USB cable. There is 2 GB of free space, which will more than fit a couple of music albums. The accessory can become a host for other Bluetooth devices, such as wireless headphones. So you don’t have to take your smartphone for a run, because it’s convenient to switch your favorite tracks right from the watch. By the way, the company has some very sophisticated PowerBuds sports headphones in its arsenal, with which your workout will be much more fun.

Now let’s talk about the not so pleasant nuances. Stratos 3 does not display icons of the applications from which the message came, so it is difficult to immediately understand the source. You cannot reply to a notification from your device. When you receive a call on your phone, the watch continues to vibrate until you select an action on its screen. When controlling music played from a smartphone, pressing the player buttons on the watch does nothing — the volume does not change, the songs do not switch. But manufacturers usually quickly fix such firmware bugs, we are waiting for updates.

What about autonomy?

The new product was equipped with a 300 mAh battery. The battery, according to our measurements, lasts for 6 days of autonomy. They include constant heart rate monitoring and sleep analysis, continuous synchronization with a mobile phone and receiving notifications. Let us note one more point: when 5% of the charge remains, the watch does not allow you to activate the screen backlight and turns off all functions, leaving only the dial. The operating time of the device with GPS enabled depends on the selected preset and its parameters. The location is determined every second — up to 35 hours without a power outlet, GPS is recorded every five seconds — up to 45 hours, the watch communicates with satellites once a minute — up to 70 hours of autonomy.

For particularly economical use, the Ultra mode is provided. When activated, the screen resolution changes, the graphics are simplified, and the color palette is limited. The system begins to work slowly, many features are disabled. But this way, according to the vendor, you can forget about the outlet for as much as two weeks. A full cycle of energy replenishment takes 1 hour 40 minutes and is carried out through a magnetic cradle with four contacts. If it gets lost or the wire frays, it will be difficult to find the original charger.

Bottom line

As the manufacturer positions it, the watch will be an excellent choice for athletes, fitness enthusiasts and travelers. You will be pleased with its thoughtful ergonomics, abundance of sports features and high autonomy in the “Ultra” mode. If you are looking for a device just for everyday wear, then it is better to look at other options.
