Amazfit needs no introduction. Its fitness bracelets and smartwatches have already conquered the market. The brand recently released a new watch model in a classic design — GTR 2. Let’s find out what improvements the device has received and who might be interested in it.

Classic is always in fashion

A round dial, a metal case, two control buttons on the side — the Amazfit GTR 2’s strict design and dimensions hint that the watch is aimed at a male audience. For a woman’s wrist, the diameter will already be too large. There are two versions of the watch: a sports version in an aluminum case, and a classic version in a steel case. It was the sports version that was tested. At the same time, the new product is clearly lighter than the previous model: it weighs 39 grams, not 48, as was the case with the GTR.

A heart rate sensor and magnetic contacts for replenishing the battery were placed on the bottom of the case. I would like to see wireless charging, but you will have to power the accessory using the usual method. The strap is made of high-quality material that is pleasant to the touch. It has a standard 22mm width and a traditional pin mount. If desired, the original strap can be easily replaced with another.

Clear and frameless display

An interesting feature of the Amazfit GTR 2 screen is that it extends to the side edges of the watch, creating a frameless effect. Looks attractive. On top, the display is covered with a protective layer of ODLC with a declared hardness of 9H. Note that the oleophobic coating is good: your finger glides easily on the glass, fingerprints are invisible.

In the first minutes of acquaintance, the AMOLED matrix leaves a pleasant impression. A brightness of 450 nits is enough for information to be read even on a sunny day. With a resolution of 454x454 pixels and a diagonal of 1.39 inches, the pixel density is 326 ppi. The image is clear, there is not a hint of image looseness. The smooth interface also adds comfort.

There are a lot of interesting features in the settings. For example, the “At the Theater” preset is useful for attending cultural events — the screen brightness is reduced to a minimum, the watch stops responding to raising your wrist. If you need to constantly display the time on the screen, the Always on Display option will help out. Moreover, you can choose a digital or analog dial according to your own taste.

Staying fit is easier than it seems

The watch is replete with features aimed at supporting a healthy lifestyle. Amazfit GTR 2 received the second generation BioTracker optical sensor. It can monitor your heart rate around the clock. The device analyzes the phases of deep and REM sleep and monitors stress levels. Activity records are easy to view thanks to visual interface widgets. Measuring blood oxygen saturation is another useful option that was missing in the previous generation.

The accessory offers 12 main sports modes, but with updates their number can be increased. There are running, cycling, mountain climbing and swimming in the pool. We decided to test the last scenario in practice. During exercise, the touch screen is blocked and water does not interfere with the workout. The display shows basic parameters such as distance swam, time spent, number of crossings of the pool from edge to edge. There were no complaints about the measurement error. I was a little confused by the work of the GPS — the gadget searches for satellites very slowly. The step count seems quite accurate: the watch and the pedometer built into the smartphone showed similar numbers.

Connecting to a phone

To pair your smartwatch, you will need to download the Zepp app on your smartphone. The connection is simple: a QR code appears on the Amazfit GTR 2 display, which must be scanned with your mobile phone camera. The utility provides detailed statistics on the use of the accessory — distance traveled, heart rate, analysis of sleep phases and other parameters. You can set goals and track your progress, as well as receive the necessary recommendations to improve your quality of life. If you are bored with the standard dials, it is easy to install an alternative option through the Zepp program.

Autonomy

The new product was equipped with a battery with a capacity of 471 mAh. For comparison, the previous model had 410 mAh. The autonomy of Amazfit GTR 2 is decent. Judging by test measurements, one charge is enough for 11–12 days of continuous use. This scenario includes constant heart rate monitoring, step counting, receiving notifications, 3 workouts per week, sleep quality analysis. Not to mention periodically measuring stress levels and the amount of oxygen in the blood.

It’s easy to extend the operating time: to do this, you need to activate the economical preset in the quick access curtain. The menu is simplified, the watch only records steps and sleep information. But the autonomy is impressive — the time allotted for the review was simply not enough to significantly discharge the Amazfit GTR 2 in maximum energy saving mode.

Amazfit GTR 2

Pleasant trifles

The longer you use the new product, the more interesting things you notice. For example, there is a setting for quick access functions. The bottom button can display the weather, alarm clock or training menu. The watch is equipped with 3 GB of internal memory. Therefore, it is convenient not only to manage music on your smartphone, but also to store albums on the device. A useful nuance for those who don’t want to carry their phone between exercise machines or take it for a run. Your favorite playlist will remain on your wrist; you can download it via Wi-Fi from your smartphone’s memory. You can listen to music in two ways: through the speaker or by connecting Bluetooth headphones directly to the watch, for example, native Amazfit PowerBuds.

The microphone and speaker allow you to answer calls via Bluetooth. The quality of communication is sufficient so that the interlocutor does not experience discomfort in communication. Another interesting option is support for the Alexa voice assistant. However, you will have to wait until Amazon’s AI assistant starts working in EU. This will approximately happen at the beginning of 2021.

Results

Laconic and sophisticated design, high-quality display, wide range of functions, decent autonomy — Amazfit GTR 2 pleases with balanced characteristics. There are few reasons for criticism: there is not enough NFC, and questions arose regarding the operation of the GPS receiver on the test unit. But the new product clearly has more advantages. The watch allows you to store up to 3 GB of music, measure stress levels and the amount of oxygen in the blood. The device will please both the athlete and the ordinary user who monitors his health.

The Amazfit GTR 2 smart watch can already be purchased at , Svyaznoy, MegaFon and MTS stores.
